Acupuncture - 2,000 Years of Natural Healing

Traditional & Medical Acupuncture
The ancient art of acupuncture was developed in China more than 2,000 years ago as a natural healing method that allows the body to achieve a state of harmonious balance. The practice of Traditional Chinese Medicine is based on the belief that the human body is more than a physical being--it is also a spirit with an energy force known as Qi (or Chi). When Qi becomes blocked or obstructed because of stress, illness or pain, the act of acupuncture can eliminate the blockage, allowing the Qi to once again flow freely, and helping the patient to feel a sense of relief.

The earliest description of acupuncture appears in a book that is more than 2,000 years old, called the Yellow Emperor's Classic of Medicine. The book details various methods of Chinese Medicine as practiced at the time, with acupuncture being described as a technique that stimulates certain, specific zones in the body, and restores the normal flow of Qi. Qi is thought to flow through meridians (or channels) found throughout the body, and synchronizing the body's Qi with the Qi of nature will restore balance and health. Over the centuries, traditional Chinese doctors/healers passed down their natural healing secrets to each successive generation through a student-master relationship, refining and amassing huge amounts of vital knowledge. Sometimes, entire families became known as master healers, with each individual adding to the vast stores of natural healing methods and techniques that are known today as Linear-based styles.

Acupuncture - What is It and How Does It Really Work?

What does the word Acupuncture mean? Acupuncture is derived from Latin and the literal translation is "needle prick" from "acus" and "pungere." The ancient healing arts of acupuncture and oriental medicine are readily taught throughout the world.

To describe acupuncture, one must first get to the root of its historical backdrop. Dating back as far as 2,000 BC, this age-old art parallels the Han dynasty. Even earlier than that, acupuncture may have possibly originated almost 4,000 years ago, based on hieroglyphic findings and stone (bian) and ceramic acupuncture needles, which have been documented throughout the centuries.

But what exactly is acupuncture? In general, it is a holistic healing art that is used to treat the "whole person," rather than just the parts of a person. Traditionally, acupuncture and oriental medicine schools teach students to use hair-fine needles made of copper, silver and stainless steel. The "needling" that is administered to patients is done in a specific manner, at specific points of the body. "Acupoints" are based on meridians (energy channels) throughout the body, and are used as a template (imagine a country map with key points) for acupuncture treatment. By inserting these ultra-thin acupuncture needles at various acupoints on a person's body, the corresponding organs (heart, kidneys, etc.) to the meridians are believed to be positively affected. Theoretically, the flow of Qi (vital energy force) is ultimately set back into balance so restoration and healing can occur.

For skeptics out there, acupuncture may sound like a far-fetched idea for treatment. But if you ask patients who have had a positive outcome from acupuncture, you may be astonished by the results. Through controlled trials, acupuncture has proven to be an effective treatment for the side effects of chemotherapy and radiotherapy, as wll as allergies, depression, headaches and migraines, hypertension, musculoskeletal pain, rheumatoid arthritis, stroke, and many other health conditions and diseases.
Acupuncture is used to treat illness and promote health by stimulating the body's self-healing powers by'triggering' certain points on the body with tiny needles. Recent research has shown that acupuncture alters the patients perception of pain as well as increasing their immune response and normalizing their body's functions at the same time producing a tranqulizing effect.

The concept of needles should not worry us however as these tiny needles used only penetrate the skin at a superficial level, plus the fact that they are very tiny about the size of one's hair. The experience is virtually painless.

Conditions that respond very well with acupuncture treatment:

Many chronic diseases that cannot be cured by conventional medicines have responded well with our acupuncture these include:

NEW!!... Research shows acupuncture effective treatment for migraines   ...    The latest study, published in the March, 2008 journal, Headache confirms that acupuncture significantly reduces migraines and works better that drugs alone.

The study, conducted at the University of Padua in Italy by Dr. Enrico Facco and his colleagues, included 160 participants that were divided into four groups; a true acupuncture treatment according to traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) in migraine without aura, a standard mock acupuncture protocol, an accurate mock acupuncture healing ritual, and an untreated control.

The participants in all the groups were given the medication, Rizatriptan, to treat any migraine attacks.

Over six months, only the group receiving true, traditional acupuncture showed lasting improvement in migraine disability
measured on a standardized scale.  The groups using only the medication and the mock acupuncture plus Rizatriptan showed only temporary or transient improvement.

Dr. Facco theorizes that acupuncture prevents migraine by altering nerve signals or affecting neurotransmitters released in the central nervous system. The results are promising, according to Dr. Facco, but more studies are needed to confirm the benefits of traditional acupuncture for migraine.

However, Facco added, since the therapy carries little risk of side effects, it could be worth a try for migraine sufferers who are not adequately helped by standard preventive treatment.
